Use%20a%20private%20or%20incognito%20window%20when%20booking%20flights%20and%20hotels%20online.

Many ATMs will offer much lower rates than what you can get from the airport currency exchanges.

#37. Get free WiFi at airports

Get%20free%20WiFi%20at%20airports

security.stackexchange.comWhen you’re at the airport, add “?.jpg” to the end of any URL to get around the ludicrously expensive WiFi. Alternatively, you can sit right outside an airport club lounge: Wi-Fi signals often glide through the walls.

#38. For bonus points, travel with a power strip and be the airport hero.

For%20bonus%20points%2C%20travel%20with%20a%20power%20strip%20and%20be%20the%20airport%20hero.

#39. As a treat to yourself, send yourself a postcard from each day of your travels

As%20a%20treat%20to%20yourself%2C%20send%20yourself%20a%20postcard%20from%20each%20day%20of%20your%20travels

It’ll be a nice treat to come home to and make the transition back to reality easier.

#40. On your last day in a foreign country, collect all your loose money and give it to the homeless.

On%20your%20last%20day%20in%20a%20foreign%20country%2C%20collect%20all%20your%20loose%20money%20and%20give%20it%20to%20the%20homeless.

runDisney 2015 Princess Half Marathon

It’s been a few weeks since the runDisney 2015 Princess Half Marathon and I am officially in withdrawl. runDisney events are always awesome and a highlight for me because I get to run somewhere magical. I get to run with so many friends who I otherwise only ‘see’ and talk to online at the runDisney events since we all see it as a bit of a tradition to ‘just keep going’ to them. Oh…also, hello, it’s Princess themed!

Glass Slipper Challenge

I signed up for the Glass Slipper Challenge which is made up of the:

The Enchanted 10k
PLUS
The Princess Half Marathon

2 days of running = 3 beautiful medals.

3am
All 3 of the alarms I have available to me are set go off! 3am is just not a cute time no matter what.

I scrapped my cute outfit for warmth. It was unusually cold in Florida (by Florida standards…I heard Canadians talking about going to the beach) and my running skirt was tossed aside for capri’s and long sleeves. Comfort over cute won the day. The good thing about the cooler, ah heck, let’s keep it real, it was cold. Cold temps encourage you to run faster so that is the upside.I also jumped the shark and gave in to my plantar fasciitis pain and got some KT Tape from the runDisney expo. Tapped up both feet, said a prayer and hoped for some pain relief. Im happy to report it did help. It wasn’t as magical as I had hoped for but it did take the edge off the pain!

3am…still not a cute hour. Taped up my foot and made it downstairs at the Hilton Bonnet Creek in time for the Runner’s Send off party! The staff was movin & Shakin’.  The energy was awesome and it was very much welcomed at that ridiculous time. I really appreciated having coffee, water, fruit, oatmeal, granola bars, bagels. They had everything a runner needs. This is how you do a race and this is how you get fired up to run 13.1 miles! Thank you Hilton for taking such good care of us runners!!

Big Thanks to the Hilton Bonnet Creek for providing me with a 2 night stay. I was not asked to write about my experience. It was such an incredible time and they really take care of their guests and runners during race weekends. I can’t recommend staying with them enough.

Pre Vacation diet

The winter blahs…we all get them. Day in and day out of grey skies and cold temps. We just want the beach, blue skies, warm air and palm trees.

sea-77737_1280

We book those warm weather vacations  and count down the days.  We say to ourselves, “This time, I am wearing that great swimsuit and I will look fantastic. I may even brek out my bikini”

We have it in our mind that we are getting beach ready! Then excuses and the winter blahs set in and out of nowhere we are t-minus 3 weeks away from hopping on that plane and you realize, your goals didn’t align with your effort-eeek!!

Here are some tips to get vacation ready fast:

-try on your bathing suit (you too men) – take your measurements so you can track your progress

bikini-377487_1280

-take your pic in your bathing suit and keep it close, its a great reminder of why you are making changes!!

-put your family on notice … no more junk!

no-food-154333_1280

-clean out the cupboards – the less temptation there is, the better you will stay the course!

-grocery shop and have your meal plan prepared. Make sure you are packing your lunches, you have healthy snacks ready to go. If you are stuck, you will look for the quickest option and that usually is fast food or a restaurant–no excuses, be prepared.

-plan your workouts – you need to workout everyday, end of discussion. No sympathy here from me. You put this off, so now its time to get hardcore!

gym-526995_1280

-enlist the support of family and friends – you dont want to be covered up your entire vacation or not be willing to take some pictures.

-drink water like it is your job – 3-4L everyday – no negotiations here

water-19659_1280

-stay positive! your hard earned money has gone into this trip, so stick with this plan so you can enjoy your time off

-there are no deals – you can’t say “I will eat this muffin and not eat lunch” or “I will workout twice as hard tomorrow” no deals!

-speaking of muffins…no processed carbs…NONE. If it has a label, don’t eat it! JERF-just eat real food.

vegetables-449950_1280

-you know you will be happier if you feel better…so, do the work. Buckle down and commit to fit!

Once you get off that plane you will have all of the confidence in the world walking along the beach!

beach-84564_1280

Ahhhhhh…goodbye winter.

I’m Officially a Cruiser!

So, I’m officially a cruiser!

I’ve always wondered why people are so hooked on cruising and now I FINALLY GET IT…I finally get it!

After this short cruise, I can honestly say I cannot wait to get cruising again! #hooked

I’ve always been reluctant to try cruising. We were always all inclusive resort vacationers, which I still love but now my world has been opened up! You know, try new things; keep an open mind and all. I was always worried about not being happy on a ship or being bored. I was blown away with Royal Caribbean‘s Freedom of the Seas. There was so much to do and I WANTED TO DO IT ALL! I wanted to wake up early and go to bed late…just so I could experience all she had to offer.

I was just like a kid, excited at every turn. I couldn’t stop saying “I love this” or “this is so awesome”.

I was in awe of the detail that is on and in the Freedom of the Seas. I was floored by all of the dining options but I was even more impressed and thrilled that there were so many fitness/athletic options!! #heaven

As a first time cruiser, every experience was new and exciting. It was great to meet experienced cruisers to get their insight and must do’s.

The Freedom of the Seas is newly updated and let me tell you, she is fantastic! Having really had nothing to compare it to except perhaps a hotel, I can say that the amenities, appointments and detail were just as good, if not better than many brand name hotels I’ve stayed at.

I looked at all of the options I could do while on board:

3D movie theatre – check

Outdoor movie screen – check

“Flowrider” Surf Simulator- check

Ice skating show – check

Rock climbing wall, mini golf – check check

Library – check

H20 Water park on board – check

State of the art fitness center – check

Spa treatments – check

Cupcake Cupboard, Vinteges Wine Bar, Sabor Mexican restaurant-check, check, check!

Character meet and greet with Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda characters- selfie check!

If you have not cruised then book one! I had such a great time! If you need a travel companion, let me know, I just can’t wait to get cruising again

Enough talk from me, take a look at a few of my pics and fall in love with Freedom Of The Sea’s.

What is a “racecation” and how to do it right

Running and vacations don’t usually go hand in hand, but that old school thinking has come under attack lately and there are a few companies doing what they can to change your thinking. The new trend of booking a race and tying it into your vacation plans has become the thing to do and I LOVE IT!

Booking yourself into a race ‘out of town’ has a tendency to deepen your commitment to your training. Booking a race that your whole family can come and cheer you on? Well that is a memory you won’t soon forget!

Here’s the beauty of a ‘racecation’.

  1. You get the physical challenge of doing your run.
  2. You get the post run relaxation in style.
  3. You share it all with your family.
  4. Your family gets to celebrate your huge accomplishment and have their own fun!  “Win-Win”

I just completed runDisney’s Dopey Challenge as part of their Marathon Weekend. 4 days of running for a total of 48.6 miles!

Getting ready to get my runDisney Dopey mugshot

20150110_090100

We were fortunate to stay at the stunning Waldorf Astoria Orlando as part of their own style of celebrating  #MarathonWeekends. The Waldorf and Hilton Bonnet Creek guests are treated to a race weekend like no other.

20150110_161705

Let’s start with having a “race concierge”—whhaat??!! Yes, someone dedicated to answer all of your race and stay questions. They made sure you knew the bus times, the send off party, bus pick up locations and knew them well beyond ‘looking in a race brochure’ for the right answers. For anyone nervous or for first time runners, this is such a great service to have. If you needed things, they were there to help get you the answers. It was such a great add-on!

We had to get up at 3am everyday to make the bus over to the race site. You know, make-up, hair, primping and the such don’t happen magically even when your hanging your hat at Disney World! The runs started at 530am (so painful!!) Do you know what wakes you up at that unearthly hour…a pre race send off party!!! That’s right, they give the runners a send off party!!!!

20150111_033417

Note: this is 3am and the staff are fired up for us!!

Before the half marathon and full marathon, you could get your coffee/tea, water, fruit, bagel, granola bars, muffins. You name it they had it! Take a bar for the bus ride or to eat while you’re waiting in your corral.

20150111_033046

Lots of pre race fuel options!

20150111_033101

coffee…need I say more?!

20150111_033054

Every kind of tea you could imagine #options

20150111_033259

Carbs!!!!

20150111_033315

Water options – flat or sparkling!

They had staff their cheering, dancing and helping us wake up to get our game faces on to run the races! The staff and their energy were out of this world and it was so appreciated at that time of the morning!!

Its not a 3am pre race party until someone puts on a blue wig!!

The transportation to and from the races is also provided as part of #MarathonWeekends – there are no  long lines or waiting for the 4th or 5th bus outside. You wait in the lobby have some coffee and water then get on the bus. It’s all very civilized…it was wonderful!

They had this awesome banner to do pics in front of!!

You can always be number one with Marathon Weekends.

This is where I spent my post run time after the temperature went up…ahhhhhhh

Blue skies and warm water.

I wish I had longer to visit, I would’ve loved to been able to get a round of golf in. This is great option for the golfer in your family and makes everyone’s stay more memorable.

My girls really got into enjoying this “racecation”. They HAD to wear the robes and slippers!! After a long day at the parks they needed to unwind, haha!

The race experience provided by The Waldorf Astoria Orlando and the Hilton Bonnet Creek is by far the best I’ve had the pleasure to take part in. Beautiful accommodations (I slept like a champ), amenities (amazing golf, pool, lazy river, spa) incredible on property restaurants (Oscars for breakfast was spectacular).

One other option that deserves a notable mention is the in room coffee. Yes, the in room coffee…Nespresso machine. The coffee addict in me was beyond thrilled to have a really good cup of coffee and not leave my room. Sometimes the attention to finer details is all that it takes.

If you are looking at booking a future runDisney race, you have to consider staying on property at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando or Hilton Bonnet Creek.

You will not be disappointed and it will be an experience that will be hard to top!

Now I lay me down to sleep…with my medals and aching feet!

4 days, 48.6 miles, 6 medals = incredible time.

Thanks to everyone who cheered me on and supported all the runners. I can’t tell you how awesome it is when strangers cheer and ‘holla’ your effort.

Marathon Weekends are available for these runDisney events:

  • Princess Half Marathon Weekend
  • Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend
  • Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend.

Is this kind of selfie called a 'mousie'?

Even if you’re not running a race, these are fantastic on property resorts and I highly recommend you book your stay here.

Good night

Good night

Full Disclosure: The Waldorf Astoria Orlando graciously hosted me for two nights. I was not required to write this blog post. I wrote this because it was one of the best running/racecation experiences I have had. If you are a regular reader, you know I only write about what I believe in and what I can fully support. I plan on booking another racecation with the Waldorf Orlando / Hilton Bonnet Creek because of what they do as a part of their #MarathonWeekends

Travel Tuesday #TT – restaurant review + travel tip

For you regular readers y’all know that food is a big topic here on the blog. Admittedly, I struggle everyday, all day making good choices. You also know that I am weird about eating out. I’m not a picky eater because I love food, but I am a judgemental eater. I easily get weirded out by restaurants and those that prepare my food *germaphobia*

I met a friend last week for dinner and I felt so compelled to write a review because it was such a great experience. Let’s dig in to why I had to write about my meal. My friend suggested we meet in the Dr. Phillips area of Orlando. We met at Stefano’s Grill. I figured,”grill” there had to be something I could eat. I have to start by saying our waiter greeted us like we were in his home, I felt so welcomed. He then asked about our food preferences – what??!!! Asked about allergies, he shared that they have gluten free meals-YES, gluten free (hallelujah!!)  and that they can accomodate requests because they make everything from scratch!  Everything made fresh…ahhhhhhh, music to my ears. He shared the specials in great detail (which I loved), he explained all of the produce is organic and locally sourced, except the tomatoes which are brought in from Italy, they are not messing around #quality —it keeps getting better. I said that I like to eat healthy and he shared some of his favourite picks with me. He genuinely cared about our dining experience, not just take the order and place the food in front of you.

Now let’s get into the food. Stefano’s Grill has something for everything. It is an amazing grill with a variety of incredible steaks to rival any steakhouse but they also specialize in Italian fusion (look at their website and get ready to drool) .

There is something on the menu to satisfy every kind of appetite. Their gluten free menu is what I was really curious about. Gluten free meals can be tough to make, especially pasta which is very tempermental.

We decided to start with an appetizer their house special crab cake (no filler or heavy breading- just big chunks of crab)Image

and the claims

Both were incredible.

I opted for the fresh caught salmon for my entree and it came with pasta, I asked for the gluten free.

My friend went with the Kale salad and added shrimp to it.

Wow! SUCH GOOD FOOD -yes all caps.

I have to say they nailed the pasta. The sauce was incredibly infused into the pasta–how did they do that?! I don’t eat pasta so this was a real treat. My salmon was cooked perfectly. It was such a great meal, I really have to rave about it. I havent eaten that well and felt that comfortable at a restaurant in a long time. The staff came by frequently and asked about the meal, they really wanted to know.

 My only regrets:

-not trying my friends Kale salad – but I was too busy inhaling my dinner.

-not having enough room for dessert

When you are in Orlando go and eat there (thank me later). They also offer a Sunday brunch that has a lobster omelette…what the what?! I will definitely be going back.

I give it 4 Carrie stars which is the highest honor I can.

Travel Tip Tuesday

Whenever I travel I always talk to locals and find out where they go for food. If the locals eat there you know there has to be some good eats! This tip has never failed me. I have had the best Key Lime pie in Key West Florida, out of this world Jerk chicken in Jamaica, incredible (and authentic) Thai food in Toronto (yes Toronto-Canada!)

Most people are incredibly honest about food and their food experiences–so ask!

Question of the day (three parter):

-What is your best travel food tip?

-Where have you had the best _________ ??

-If I came to visit you, where would you recommend I go and eat?
