Intermittent Fasting: Why Am I Hearing So Much Auout It And What Is It?

Intermittent Fasting is becoming more and more popular as a bona-fide weight loss and fat loss tool.

Truthfully, intermittent fasting is nothing new. For those of us that have been in the health and fitness industry for any amount of time, we’ve known about is and we’ve probably used it. (It is my daily routine).

Chances are you’ve been hearing a lot more about it lately and you might be thinking, “A new fad in diets.”

Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s not new and it isn’t a fad. I believe that with people finally understanding how bad they’ve been lied to by big marketing and weight loss pharma, people are more open to looking to the real pros for the answers.

So, here it is:

Intermittent Fasting: What is it

Intermittent fasting is not a diet. It is a schedule for eating. It is a way to optimize your bodies natural chemical process surrounding the timing of fat release from cells, digestion and caloric burn.

The Health Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

There are many good reasons to give intermittent fasting a try. Improving your overall health and wellbeing is one of the major ones. In fact, there are quite a few different health benefits to be gained from intermittent fasting.

Lower Your Blood Sugar

Intermittent fasting can help you reverse insulin resistance. Part of that is due to weight and belly weight in particular that you’ll be losing as you fast, but a part of that is because you are avoiding blood sugar spikes while you’re fasting. If you combine intermittent fasting and staying away from sugar, sweets and white flour you can expect to see even better results. Wouldn’t it be worth it to reduce your risk for Diabetes?

Lower Your Blood Pressure

Fasting has also been shown to lower your blood pressure. As you are putting less stress on your body by cutting out some of the food you’re eating and as you’re burning off excess body fat, your blood pressure will start to lower, thus reducing your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Lose Weight – Burn Fat

Speaking of weight loss… one of my favorite benefits of intermittent fasting is losing weight. This particular way of eating and fasting seems to be very effective in losing the dangerous belly fat. You are continually moving from times of eating little to times of eating plenty.

Your metabolism stays strong, allowing you to burn off fat.

Reduce Inflammation

Fasting has also been shown to reduce inflammation in your body. It isn’t certain exactly how this is accomplished, but there is plenty of data out there that intermittent fasting is effective in reducing inflammation and the nasty side effects it brings with it.

Help Your Body Regenerate On a Cellular Level

Last but not least your body seems to go into repair mode when you’re fasting. Your cells start to generate and your body does everything it can to keep you in shape. Presumably, this is a genetic trait left from hunter and gatherer times.

During lean times, the body would regenerate and stay in shape so we were able to go find the food we needed to survive.

Today we can use fasts to mimic this famine effect and reverse the effects of illness, cancer and aging at least to a point. Does that mean fasting is the

cure-all for anything that may ail us? Of course not, but it is a tool we can use on our journey to better health.

There you have it!

A really good introduction to Intermittent Fasting and how it is a centuries old way of eating. You centuries when we weren’t measured as a society with an obesity epidemic.

World Obesity Day: Let’s Change The Future Together

World Obesity Day. It doesn’t matter what country you’re in. What demographic you represent. What age you are or even what your genetic make up is. Someone you know struggles with their weight.

I’ve been in awe today at the number of articles that are being published today talking about world obesity day.

Can we solve it? How do we live with it? Can we create the needed changes? What’s the best diet? Who has the best information?

Obesity is a money maker and a money taker.

Companies are getting absolutely rich off your cravings, your wants and your special treats. Governments are going broke trying to pay for all the health related issues due to obesity.

How Did We Get Here?

Simple. Scientists lied, doctors lied, food manufacturers lied, governments lied. All those lies made a lot of money for people and organizations.

What we got for in return for the lies was confused and tricked about facts of nutrition. Confusion that has led to World Obesity Day.

One of the most complete articles I’ve read today about it is from Harvard Health. It’s a really good article that covers the history and the future of obesity and tackles what it will take to fix the problem.

The article does say one thing that I disagree with. It says the solution is very complex.

I don’t believe it is.

I believe the solution is very simple.

  1. Make truth in advertising factual.
  2. Take government out of food lobbyists pockets.
  3. Mandate up to date nutritional training for doctors.
  4. Tax and regulate advertising on fat producing products like was done to tobacco.
  5. Put mandatory exercise back in schools.
  6. Make exercise and weight loss and diet products tax exempt.

OK, so maybe it’s not that simple.

But this is… move more, eat nutritious food for energy.

Health Issues

Do you know that obesity is a cause or major contributing factor of:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Cardio Vascular Disease
  • Multiple Types Of Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Gastrointestinal Problems
  • Shorter Life Expectancy
  • Joint Disintegration

  • ….just to name a few

I see so many people who are over weight heading to obese and they don’t have a care in the world. Parents who will never see grandchildren and if they are lucky enough to be around, they will be watching them from a motorized cart or from the couch.

I was interviewing a woman who was looking to become a client of mine and she literally said, “I’m not too worried if I don’t lose the weight, I can just get gastric bypass done.”

Honestly… what has the world come to when we are willing to go through hell and back and risk incredible complications and life altering surgery instead of doing the work?

Needless to say, I didn’t take her on as a client. You have to want to improve your own health more that I want you to. And believe me, I want you to improve your health!

Paleo Diet: The Problem With Paleo

Paleo diet plans are really popular right now, well the have been for some time, but they are gaining in popularity.

First off, I really don’t like names or labels but for a point of reference we are going to go over what paleo eating is.

As with anything, there are many interpretations of what a paleo diet is. It’s much like being a vegetarian. There some are ovo lacto vegetarians, some are just ovo vegetarians, and on and on – you get where I am coming from right?

There are different classes of the paleo diet as well.

The problem with the paleo diet is only a problem with some old school thinking.

Paleo is essentially removing processed grains and dairy from your diet.

Let’s be clear what processed grains are: crackers, bread, pasta,cereal, muffins etc. Refined flour. Dairy is cows milk and anything that is made from it – sour cream, cream cheese, yogurt.

I don’t want to get all sciencey with you but…

You don’t need either one of those “food” groups. They are not essential to life or body operations. Neither of them are considered nutrients…. they are classes of food.

Let’s break this down quickly.

Paleo Diet And Carbohydrates

You still eat carbs on a paleo diet, hooray!! You just eat better carbohydrates.

  • There is no such thing as a processed carb deficiency #science
  • No one is or ever had been refined sugar deficient

The government and antiquated education programs drilled it deep into our brains that we need all of these grains! The truth, and scientific research has proven, we don’t need them.

For those old school physicians, dieticians and health organizations (looking at your Diabetics society and cancer society) that have been taught to push grains, they will argue that you neeeeeeeed them.

  • We need to eat real food.
  • Unprocessed real food.

Veggies are carbs people – start cheering vegans.

You get better vitamins and minerals from veggies then you will ever get from bread and crackers.

Veggies will do the job 10x better than any cereal or bread that has been fortified. It’s been fortified or ‘enriched’ because it was stripped of anything good.

So are we good?!

You do not physiologically need processed refined carbohydrates.

Paleo Diet And Dairy

Dairy… I need a shirt, dairy is the devil.
Again, we have been brain washed that dairy is vital to growth.

Get ready for more science…

Dairy, or any form of dairy is growth hormone for baby cows. Cows milk helps get baby cows to grow at a rapid rate – they need them big, fast.

And what has happened to our population with the over consumption of dairy…we got big, fast.

Cows milk contains an allowable amount of puss, antibiotics, growth hormone, medications, infection. Allowable by the government.

No other species on earth drinks another animals milk – so why do we?

Why…

  • are we so sick as a nation?
  • is cancer and diabetes a 1/3 stat now?
  • do little girl develop so quickly?
  • are women struggling with infertility, fibroids and having hysterectomies at an alarming pace?
  • do so many women struggling with thyroid issues?
  • is Alzhemier’s and dementia on the rise?

There are a number of reasons for the above questions, but dairy consumption and eating processed food is at the top of the list.

Let food be thy medicine people!

You can abuse and hurt yourself with food or you can let food nourish and heal you.

I have been honored to work with thousands of people over the course of my career and I have seen first hand the benefits of eating real food.

It is life changing.

Mother’s Day: A DAY? WHAT WAS THAT?

Happy post Mother’s Day!

The best part of my life is being a Mom! Without a doubt… owner, operator, coach, trainer, motivator, doctor… there isn’t a title I could live without except, MOM. That is the most important title I have and the one I love more than any other.

Yesterday, Mother’s Day 2017. Oh the build up… the hype, the sales, the promises, the cards, the flowers, the breakfast, lunch, dinners and more! An amazing day… WHAT, A DAY??

A DAY?? THAT’S ALL WE GET? ONE FREAKING DAY?

Presidents get a day and there’s only been 45 of them.
July 4th gets a day.

Teachers get a week and they only play teacher for 8 hours a day with weekends, holidays and summers off.

Mother’s Day should be a month long celebration, with a massive one week build up and a day that every mom get’s everything they want for free.

Think… Thanksgiving, or Christmas. Massive build up for one day.

Don’t Mother’s deserve the same?

OK… rant over. I actually have some stuff to talk about here…

Mother’s Day can be a tough one for a lot of women. A lot of us spend some of the day reflecting on the moms that we’ve lost. (Especially if they were gone too soon).

I lost my Mom on my 20th birthday. Yes, actually on my 20th birthday.

There are so many things that happen daily, that I wish my Mom was here for. She never got to see me be a mom… I think she’d like what she would see though. There is a whole lot of her in my ‘mothering’.

My Mom passed early because of poor health. It has been a driver for me for the last 20+ years.

Your family wants to celebrate a lot of Mother’s Days with your.

Carrying 20 extra pounds increases your health risks – that is just science. Risky behaviors do the same.

Your family wants you around for a long time, trust me.

You want to be here for them.

Make that a part of your WHY to be healthy and stay healthy.

It’s not a punishment to be disciplined with your eating and exercise. It’s just what you do to maintain good health and longevity.

Making sure you have lots of Mother’s Day celebrations ahead is pretty easy…

Do you even have a routine or just make things up as you go along?  Winging it…that’s where things go sideways. You can’t have a goal without a plan.

Life is crazy right?!

Things change daily, kids get sick from school, family issues happen, work is chaos, car breaks down, you get injured…etc etc etc…so how do you plan around that?

You have systems in place that allow flexibility.  You can have routines in place which give you a path to follow. Almost always the best paths are the ones that other’s have walked before you showing the easier, more successful route.  Those paths and systems make for at least 80% of the results you are seeking in everything you do in life. 

Otherwise you’ll do what most people do; achieve just a small percentage of what they say they want.

What do I mean by routines and systems?

  • scheduling priorites
  • days you are working out on
  • food prep day
  • shopping days
  • family activities
  • the time you wake up (Pro tip: get up 30 minutes earlier)
  • when bed time is roughly (Pro tip: go to bed 30 minutes earlier)
  • social activities

“But, Carrie, I don’t want to live my life out of a daily planner”.  If that’s your first thought then you are basically saying that you don’t really want to achieve the goals you claim you do. You are making it up each and every morning you will be making your choices and decisions out reaction, out of immediacy and hurry which leads to living in stress rather than within priorities, purpose, intent and time.

Everything that is successful around us was built on a system. Everyone who is successful has systems in their life making things easier, more efficient, faster and flexible.

You might think that you don’t have the motivation to take on a healthy lifestyle change… but you do.
Give yourself more credit than that. Use whatever you need to get you started.  Look at your kids or your family, that is motivation to do better!!!
You are a role model to someone.

Plan and prepare don’t just try to wing it, it does’t work like that.

Make small changes everyday.
